With its unique Main Beach setup, The Laguna Open is one of the few tournaments where fans can get near the action and see their volleyball heroes up close.  The naturally beautiful setting of rolling hills and the narrow Main Beach combined with the "old school" no-grandstands design ethos creates a "toes in the sand" environment. We believe that the combination of natural beauty and intimate tourney setting fosters a connection between the fans and players, which drives an energy that is felt across the tournament.

The History

WELCOME TO THE WORLD'S LONGEST RUNNING BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT!

It has been a central theme of the Laguna Open to honor and remain committed to its grassroots beginning while evolving to attract the best players in the game.  Providing a tournament where the players, sponsors, fans, volunteers and partners become part of our community is our mission.

Laguna Beach holds a special place in the history of beach volleyball. The sport has deep roots in the area, with the beach becoming a legendary hub for volleyball players in the 1960s.

Over the years, some of the greatest names in both men's and women's beach volleyball have competed here. On the men's side, legends such as Dane Selznick, Ron Von Hagen, Ron Lang, Gene Selznick, Butch May, Mike O'Hara, Greg Lee, Rudy Suwara, Jay Hanseth, Jon Lee, Jim Menges, Leonard Amato, Bob Vogelsand, Chris Marlowe, Andy Fishburn, Pat Powers, Karch Kiraly, Sinjin Smith, Randy Stoklos, Tim Hovland, Mike Dodd, Bernie Holtzman, Larry Mear, Ricci Luyties, Brent Frohoff, Scott Ayakatubby, Sean Fallowfield, Scott Freiderichsen, Steve Obradovich, Mike Garcia, Brian Lewis, Scott Fortune, Ryan Mariano, Taylor and Trevor Crabb, Ed Ratledge, Matt Gage, Bob Clem, Rand Carter, Mike Bright, Ryan Doherty, Casey Patterson, Tri Bourne, Hawk Hatcher, Chase Frishman, Eric Zaun, and many more.

On the women's side*, icons like Kelly Cheng, Barbara May, Kathy Gregory, Nancy Cohen, Nina Matthies, Kathy Hanley, Janice Harrer, Elaine Rocque, Karolyn Kirby, Jackie Silva, Bonnie Counts, Gabby Roney, Lynne Galli, Lisa Rutledge, and many others have left their mark.

* We are requesting assistance with identifying prior women players at The Laguna Open. Historical records have proven difficult to locate so any help is appreciated.
